How School Works in Uganda
Uganda's education system may look different from the U.S. model. Rather than elementary, middle, and high school, children progress through Primary (P1–P7), O-Level secondary (S1–S4), and A-Level secondary (S5–S6).
S1–S4
O-Level Secondary
4 years · Ages 13–16
Students take a broad range of subjects and complete the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE), similar to the first years of high school.
S5–S6
A-Level Secondary
2 years · Ages 17–18
Students focus on principal subjects and take the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE), which prepares them for university or further training.
At each stage, school fees, uniforms, learning materials, meals, and transport can prevent a child from continuing. Sponsorship helps remove those barriers so children can stay in school.
